Improve Search Engine Rankings
from Davin Ogden- SEO Strategist
Many techniques are involved if you want to improve your search engine rankings
More often than not learning the methods to improve your search engine ranking seems like such a daunting
task to most people that they end up avoiding the issue altogether. Well guess what? You are either going to have to face
your website or suffer serious consequences of less profit and low rankings indefinitely. Your web site needing a
higher search engine ranking is so essential that if you have the any desire at all to actually succeed in
your business, there just isn't a way to avoid this.
Approximately 80 to 90% of people looking for products and services on the net find web sites through
search engines such like Google, MSN, AltaVista, Yahoo, Ask and the like. The whole concept behind optimizing your pages for
higher search engine rankings is to target people to your site who will be interested in what your web site has to offer. The
better position your page comes up in search engine results, then the more traffic you will have coming in to your website.
This is precisely why we would want to optimize our web pages.
You can completely ramsack yourself into looking at all the techno mumble jumble out there on the internet about
how to optimize your pages in your website. Or you can quickly do a couple of simple things, make some small adjustments,
and generally you should see improved rankings real fast. The first thing you want to look at is the title bar on your
homepage.
The title bar is the one that people read at the top of their browsers. Take a peak at the words
that are on there when you open your home page. To improve search engine ranking, the words in your
title bar should include your most important keywords or phrases, one of which could be your company title name.

So ok then, with that said, what do you think you might want to do next? Well
your going to want to make sure that you do the same for every single page in your website, preferably. Make sure that your main
targeted keyword or phrase is included. But also, avoid long strings of keywords, keeping them to a max of six
words or fewer. Don't repeat keywords more than once in title bars, and make sure that identical words are not smack dab
next to one another.
The next thing you'll want to look at is website content. Search
engines usually like to list sites that contain quality content rather than little content and just a bunch of graphics.
The content in your pages must contain the most important keywords, these are the ones in which your potential buyers will type in
to find your site.
Have if you can, at least 250-300 words on each page, but if this
doesn't mix with your design, aim for at least 100 carefully chosen words. If your creating a new site or making changes to a page this is
essential in trying to improve search engine ranking. You must have your keywords in the text. However, the search engines must be
able to read the text, meaning that the text must be in HTML and not graphic format!!
There is a simple trick to find out if your text is in html or in
graphic form. Take your cursor and try to highlight a word or two. If you can do this, the text is HTML. If the text isn't
highlighting, it is more than likely in graphic form. If this is the case make sure to change the text into HTML format in order to
increase your search engine rankings.
Now were going to talk meta tags. This might sound a
little complex but it's really just that scary meta word. It's simple code really. Lot's of people think
that meta tags are the answer to higher search engine rankings, but in reality, they only have quite a limiting effect. But
just don't go by that, it is always worth adding them just in case some search engine will use meta tags in their ranking
formula.
Finding out if your page is up to par with meta tags is fairly
simple. To do this, click the "view" button on the browser menu bar, and select "source." This will pull up a window revealing the
underlying code that created the page. You can usually find the tags near the top of the window. For example, a meta tag would
read: meta name="keywords" content=. If you don't find that code, use an html editor, such as Microsoft Frontpage or Notepad,
and put them in. This may not do much for your search engine rankings, but any little boost helps.
Ok, now what about link popularity? Now this is extremely
important in terms of search engine ranking. Almost all search engines use link popularity to rank your website. Link
popularity is based on the quality of the sites you have linked to from your links page.
If you type in "free link popularity check" in a popular search engine,
you will find some sort of program or site that will check this for you. Of course programs like IBP and SEO Elite do come
with this feature built in. What if there isn't many sites linking up to yours or that the sites that are linked up have
crappola search engine rankings. Then it's time to launch a link popularity campaign. This involves getting a hold of quality
sites, requesting that they exchange links with your site. Of course, this requires checking out the rankings of the websites you want to link
up with. IBP will do this for you, and then it will help with contacting the sites via email as well. Exchanging links
with quality sites not only boosts your search engine ranking, but it also will give you more targeted traffic to your
website.
